A beautiful example of a Chinese Shard Box with a nicely centered flower on the porcelain. The box is lacquered wood, hand painted with a red floral design on all 4 sides. Each side measures between 2-1/2" - 2-3/4" and the box is approximately 2" high. There is a small chip to the lacquer on the inside of a corner. See last picture. A little information about Shard Boxes: The history of shard boxes is tied to the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), when owning antique porcelain was illegal and many collectors destroyed their pieces: Cultural Revolution During this time, owning "bourgeois" items like antique porcelain could result in a death sentence. Many collectors broke their porcelain and threw it away. After the revolution, people began collecting the broken pieces of porcelain and trying to restore them. The Shard Box was created around 1983-1985. The Hu family in Beijing collected the shards and mounted them in new settings, such as boxes, to preserve as much history as possible
