Kutani ware is a style of Japanese porcelain known for its vibrant colors and intricate designs, typically featuring bold floral patterns, birds, and landscapes. It originated in the Kaga Domain (modern-day Ishikawa Prefecture) during the Edo period, with distinct styles evolving over centuries. The most recognizable style, known as "iro-e" (five colors), uses overglaze enamels in red, yellow, green, blue, and purple, often outlined in black or gold.
This particular cup, with its floral motif and gold accents, likely falls into a later production period, possibly post-WWII, as indicated by references to "Occupied Japan" which was a period from 1945 to 1952. During this time, Japanese manufacturers produced many decorative items for export, often in traditional styles, to aid in the country's economic recovery. These pieces, while beautiful, are generally more common and less valuable than earlier, historically significant Kutani pieces.
