A professional artist adept in oil and watercolor and known for animal subjects, Murray Killman painted from a studio in Caledonia, Ontario near an historical Indian camp site. Killman set out to educate fellow Canadians on how Canadian Birds are a renewable natural resource of significant importance. His objective was to explain how Canadian birds fill a specific role in the balance of nature, so important to our environment. A set of bird paintings were produced to complete a calendar illustration in 1973. It was the first time that Killman produced bird paintings. He was long interested in Canadian history and had produced many paintings of important events from Canada's past, one of which is the “The Battle of Lundy's Lane" at Niagara Falls, Ont., July 26, 1814.
