This is a British government verification mug — a ½ pint official capacity measure used to certify commercial mugs and tavern measures for legal trade use.
Made of pewter, this mug bears a sequence of imperial verification stamps:
VR (Victoria Regina) – Denoting initial verification under Queen Victoria (1837–1901)
ER (Edward VII Rex) – Reverified under King Edward VII (1901–1910)
GR (George V Rex) – Final re-verification under King George V (1910–1936)
Additional number marks (such as 24, 25, 36) identify local Weights and Measures districts where the piece was inspected and approved.
These successive monarch marks indicate that the tankard remained in official use over several reigns.
The tankard features:
Clearly struck verification stamps, including the royal ciphers and crown symbols
Traditional ½ pint capacity mark
Patinated pewter finish consistent with age and official handling
Solid construction typical of government-standard verification vessels. Pot belly / baluster shape
Maker mark exists, but it's illegible (see picture).
This is from Britain’s weights and measures system and an excellent example for collectors of antique pewter, British civic history, or pub memorabilia.
Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear and patina. Marks are legible. No major dents or repairs noted. See pictures for condition.
