The robe features symbols used in Daoist divination, including eight sets of black trigrams (bagua) that represent Chinese cosmology. These ancient mystical symbols are used to organize the forces of nature and pervade Chinese culture. A theatrical garment such as this one was generally worn to play a strategist with magic power.
