Measuring 16cm by 10cm by 10cm is a fine example of carnival chalkware piggy banks. Most chalkware is usually not coated but this one has a glaze on it so it has worn well through the years. The piggy bank still retains its plug at the botton, most are long gone at this point of age but then again, when I loose a plug i will go to the dollar store and replace it. If you look carefully you can see how the mold joins across the top of her hair and how it was sanded. She is lovely to look at with her bright colours and is a wonderful addition to those who collect ceramics, chalkwares,
History on carnival chalkware - Chalkware is an american term to name figurines that were made of plaster of Paris or gypsum. They were painted with watercolours or oil paints and some of them were covered in a resin to protect the paint. the chalkware was all hand-painted and were always hollow. Sometimes it was poured in two molds, one a cheap mold and the finishing mold on the outside to cut costs. Chalkware made their debut in the late 18th century, the 20th century and then again in the Great Depression. Chalkware, as it ages will show chips and cracks unless you’re lucky to find a glazed one. The carnival chalkware was made as prizes for the winners of a game in the late 40's to the 1950"s and then stuffed animals began to show up, much more cost efficient and carnival slowly petered out.memories or save piggy banks
