kparedes @lmwest Hi Letha! It's nice to meet you. Yes we had our IEP right before he turned 3 just passed Dec. he is now transitioned to his DHH preschool. I was very aware in what the meeting was about and let me tell you that I was very particular about every little detail they had written before signing it. We were surrounded with information and great help from our family resource coordinator. How is your daughter now? Does she have CI on both ears? I would love to hear your story?

Jan 24Reply
kparedes
kparedes @limomprecious2 my funding goes towards to the school, by donating either school supplies or funding for their activity trips. Like you my son lost his hearing at the age of 1. He had born with hearing and later on diagnosed that he is profoundly deaf on both ears, which they don't know the reason. Our insurance didn't pay for them but somehow manage to qualify for childrens Medicare and financial assistance from Childrens Hosp which paid for the surgery.

And nice Donoration them preschool ... What you would like me to ?? Let me know any question keep me post then I would love to help then :)
Jan 24Reply
kparedes
kparedes @limomprecious2 at the age of 2 that he received his surgery for his Cochlear implant. He is still delayed in speech, we are hoping that by attending this preschool he'll be able to talk normally at his age. I advise you to look into your State Medicare if you can qualify. Where I live (Washington), the law is that you are allowed to get one set of implant.

Feb 01Reply
kparedes
kparedes @arimethia no we don't do ASL for now, bec my son has cochlear implant, our main goal is to have him learn how to speak and talk normally first. We will def learn ASL later on when he goes to primary school.
Feb 01Reply
briellab0o
briellab0o I just saw this post- this is awesome for you to this cause. I am profoundly deaf and use ASL. I am just being curious- why do you want to wait on to learn/teach him ASL later on? I understand you want him to learn speak first but in my option it is really important for him to learn ASL now- early as possible at this age. He will be able communicate with you so much better along with learning to speak. Because suppose, if he couldn't speak this word and he gets so upset at someone for not understanding what he's trying to tell him- he can use ASL to communicate instead get so upset & can't tell what exactly he wants to say. My girls are hearing- I taught them both ASL since they was born and now they're communicating with me thru ASL but also have been learning how to talk at same time because my hubs is hoh & family are hearing. It's really great to have them be able communicate with me but most importantly, they were able to tell me what they want without get so upset. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. I am just being curious and definitely respect what you want for your son :) just want to help out and if you would like to learn more about ASL- I will be more than happy to help you out! I'm majoring in deaf education and want to be a ASL teacher :)
Feb 01Reply
kparedes
kparedes @briellab0o wow! Thank you so much for sharing. I understand what you're telling me and for a good reason why we didn't start him with ASL at a you age is bec we want to make sure he knows how to talk first. We based our decisions towards family, religion and community, we come to a non signing world and we felt that we have to make sure that with his CI that he will be able to use it at its most! We def would learn ASL in the right time. We do some basic signs at home and this helps us a lot in our communications with his emotions and feelings. Thank you so much and pls keep in touch!!!
Feb 01Reply
briellab0o
briellab0o That's great! I feel a lot better knowing you actually do basic signs with him that's important he can do some signs if necessary. I've been meaning to ask you if you do basic signs. It's really great to know you are also open up to learning ASL too. Not too many parents would do that- that's totally another topic to discuss about ;) You can always email me anytime- megsholloway@gmail.com ☺

annsc
annsc My nephew is not heading impaired, but he was delayed in speaking when he was a toddler. My sister bought him "Signing Time" a set of DVDs that teaches basic everyday signs. He used to sign his wants until eventually he became comfortable with speaking.. (He's now a grade ahead in school). My sister gave me those DVDs and I showed it to my 2 year old... She loves watching it because its full of singing, children, and animations.. She can speak normal for her age, but is also able to sign many things ;)
Feb 17Reply

kparedes @annsc thank you for sharing your story. It is great to now that your nephew is not hearing impaired but just delayed in speech. I have to say that it is a challenge for us to make him talk since he lost his hearing at the age less than one. Thnx again

crozetmom
crozetmom @kparedes hi! My youngest child (12)is adopted from China -9 years ago- and is profoundly Deaf! We are an ASL family. It's nice to meet you!
May 17Reply
kparedes
kparedes @crozetmom hi! It's nice meeting you too!😀 Does she have any CI or she just sign? My son is delayed in speech and would love to hear him talk and to make full use of his implant.
May 17Reply
crozetmom
crozetmom @kparedes No we opted to raise him in the Deaf culture. No CI. If he wants to do that when he is old enough to choose it we would support that decision though. I hope your son will pick up speech quickly! I'm sure having such a supportive and involved mom he will do GREAT! 👍
May 17Reply
kparedes
kparedes @crozetmom we actually choose not to make him learn ASL right now. We do some basic sign to help at home but for the most part we try out best to verbally communicate with him. It is a very tedious process to make him learn how to talk. But we know it'll be good for him.
May 17Reply
crozetmom
crozetmom @kparedes I can't imagine how difficult that must be. But I respect your resolve to do whatever it takes! Good Luck to you all! I pray one day he will talk your ear off :)

queeneofshoes
queeneofshoes @kparedes You have a beautiful family. May God bless them all and I hope you continue to raise money towards such a noble cause. I am a Mom of 3 myself. My 3rd was born premature and while she endured a great deal her 1st year of life (she's almost 2) we are grateful that she is a happy healthy baby now. I own an online boutique and I have a cause of my own "Shoes for a Cause" it's purpose is to collect shoes in good condition so that I can resell them and donate money to "The March for Babies" I also lost a little brother to a birth defect and prematurity so the cause is close to my heart. My grandmother always said that what you give to others you get back trifold and believe me it's true ☺
May 21Reply
kparedes
kparedes @queeneofshoes hi! I'm glad that your baby is now healthy and in good hands! We as mothers try our best to be positive in such situations and try to pay forward to others who helped us and to those who needs them! What a great thing you are doing! I heard of that organization and I hope more success to what you're doing! As for me, I have donated all my earning to my sons deaf and hard hearing preschool and had funded 3 of their school field trip for the year. I'm very proud and happy to say that it had brought joy to those kids! I love what I'm doing and will continue to do it as long as I'm able to.
May 21Reply
queeneofshoes
queeneofshoes @kparedes You are absolutely right. I always say that my children have helped me find strength that I didn't even know I had. They are my reason for everything. How wonderful that you have done so much for the school & I am sure God will make it possible for you to do more. Yes the March of Dimes/March for Babies is a great organization. I did the walk with the kids this year. I live in NJ & this year it was at Six Flags/Great Adventure they loved it 😃 I am so glad I found your closet & please let me know how I can help 😃

sbreza Hi Karina...I saw your post on donating for a cause and came to your page and then found this post on meet me and my family. My son was born profoundly deaf in both ears, however, newborn screening was not in effect at the time so we didn't know when we came home from the hospital. It wasn't until he was 5 months old that we suspected something wasn't right and at 9 months it was confirmed by CHOP and we found out the reason he was born deaf was he had Mondini Syndrome. Mondini Syndrome is his cochlear never fully formed. I was a single mom and had this hard decision in front of me, I totally trusted in God with making the right decision. At 14 months of age, he was implanted with the CI. He didn't speak his first word until he was 2 years old, it was a learning process for him to hear. I have been blessed with living near CHOP (Philadelphia) and having great support from family, friends and community. My son is 13 1/2 years old, he is starting 8 th grade next week and is in a learning support program in the district. He is also involved with Boy Scouts and some organizations that have different sporting events (soccer, flag football and basketball). It has been a journey thus far but has built a strong bond between us. My son also has some learning disabilities which have made this journey even more difficult. I am happy to say the he is thriving and becoming independent and is the absolute love of my life. Times do get frustrating because he is a teenager but he is such a good kid and is super sweet. I have been blessed with him and feel lucky to be his mom. If you ever want to chat offline, please let me know and we can exchange emails. This is a wonderful cause that you are doing for your sons school and I love to see people pay it forward. Take care and God bless you and your family. Sue

kparedes @sbreza Hi Sue. It's a pleasure meeting you! You just don't know how much I appreciate telling me your story! Glad to hear that your son is doing very well, despite of his hearing loss. My son Brysen was late diagnosed with his hearing loss, he was age 1 yr old so he is delayed in speech. Like you, we knew in our hearts that he has some hearing loss but didn't realized towards the end when the doctor told us how severe it is. We had a struggle if having him implanted with his CI bec out ins didn't cover them. But finally found a way to get his right ear implanted, also in Children's Hosp in Seattle. I would love to chat more and maybe if you can answer some questions I have. Here's my email kparedes1219@hotmail.com or if you'd be willing to talk on the phone too would be great, 206-3543313. Again it was nice to meet you! Chat with you soon☺. Karina

coachsherman
coachsherman @kparedes Hi Karina! Thanks for sharing some things about yourself and your family. My daughter has a genetic bilateral hearing loss and wears aids. There are 10 family members on my husbands side that are hard of hearing (ranging from mild to profound) and none use ASL 😞 My daughter attended a DHH program at our local public school from the age of 3 to 8 and it was the best thing ever!! They used signed instruction (SEE sign) and verbal instruction in the classroom. I just want to add to what @briellab0o mentioned about learning ASL. It is such a great language for your son and family to know. Learn it with him while he is young. I know that there is a great desire to have him assimilate to the "hearing world" with the help of technology (CI ) but he will have a tremendous learning advantage at his young age if he can communicate using sign too. Good luck with everything! 😍

akee1213
akee1213 I work with a friend in her 50s who is deaf in both ears...she wears hearing aids now, but still depends a lot on reading lips. She didn't get her aids until she was in her late 20s, but she said she knew something was wrong around the 2nd grade. She feels like so much would be different if she had support back then...she hated school, which is probably because she couldn't hear anybody. Teachers thought she wasn't paying attention, kids thought she was stuck up...I cannot imagine how she felt as a child, but i can hear the pain in her voice when she talks about it. It is wonderful to see a supportive family and school...I wish you many sales for this cause! God bless!
Mar 16Reply
kparedes
kparedes @akee1213 hi and thank u for sharing her story! Yes, back then there's no a lot of programs out there for the deaf community. I'm actually glad that now there's so many programs and with all the technology it's so much easier to detect hearing loss. I love what I do here at Poshmark that I try my best to share and donate my earnings to the deaf and hard hearing preschool where my son goes to. It's my second year of making it possible for those children to have their school field trip. Thank you for stopping by and it's a pleasure meeting you!

mtlanas56
mtlanas56 Hi! This pulled at me..I am also profoundly deaf..my hearing gradually lessened since I was 16 (32 now)..and I've just recently been approved for a cochlear implant. I'm sure it's a big adjustment for ur family, mostly from a mom knowing our child will have to work n fight harder than usual. My 3 year old daughter is not deaf but she was diagnosed with Autism n it's been an adjustment for us. God bless your family. Btw, are u by any chance, Filipino? Ur surname has that ring 😊
Mar 18Reply
kparedes
kparedes @mtlanas56 hi Mae! It's nice meeting you! Yes, me and my husband are both Filipino. Are you going to get the cochlear implant? I think it's a great technology. My son wasn't diagnosed being def at birth but he gradually lost his hearing before he turned 1 yr. we are hoping to get his other ear implanted soon. My 2 other kids are being observed just incase they would have the same situation on their hearing.

mtlanas56
mtlanas56 Hi! Yes..I will be getting CI..hopefully next month..I have other health issues to deal with first but my CI evaluation is next week n hopefully I can schedule for the surgery soon after. I am studying to be a nurse (second career since my Education degree hasn't helped me land a stable job) so I'm very excited for the CI to have before my clinicals in September 😊
