@duskybutterfly this is tapestry and it's amazing !!! I believe way older than 20s and it's not American , more than likely French or English , if you examine the clothing and the hard ware u can date it by that
Jan 23Reply

duskybutterfly
@pamlaleyan thanks for the info! So it's tapestry not petit point? How would I examine to determine age? I'd love to be better at doing that. I saw a similar one on eBay so I compared them & made my best guess about this one.

@pamlaleyan I know what you mean it's time consuming to do the pics & listings, much more so than shopping haha 😎

@duskybutterfly don't take my word for sure always check lol !! But this looks like old needlepoint , they would sit and do needle point this piece probably was not on this purse and later added . The metal frame is newer than the work , I'm just guessing with out really holding it , but always go by the scenery

@duskybutterfly this doesn't have a tag does it ? Look at the seams really good . And there should be no zipper , is there a snap inside ? Look at that and from there u can guess when the person took this piece and turned it in to a pocket book
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly I think your right it does have a French look about it ,

@duskybutterfly I'm going to enlarge an look At your pics

@duskybutterfly positive !! This is hand done , I'm looking at the stitching , this is AMAZING - the frame whiting and Davis first real company here in USA your right this is another country and some one made this took it and had the hard ware added , this is old !!!!
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly this looks French 17 18 century , the women appear to be tending a garden that gazebo looking structure was called a folly , I would love to know the material this needle point art is on , this piece if it's from that era you may want to research this , not the pocket book but the art , it's very well done
Jan 30Reply

duskybutterfly
@pamlaleyan wow thanks! Whiting & Davis? They did the frame? I didn't see any text anywhere - no label or anything. Nope no snaps or zippers either. Do you think it's older than 20s?
Jan 30Reply

duskybutterfly
Yes it's amazingly well done. Probably I should do more research before selling. Esp if you think it's THAT old wow :o Let me look at it tomorrow in better light. Thanks so much I'll tag you :))
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly if the frame is American look to whiting and Davis they were the first company to make chain here and than they made mesh pocket books , prior to that women made their own mesh , this piece though is OLD !! some one at a later
Time took the piece and turned it into a pocket book , but this is very French looking , now only upper class were able to do this type of work ,
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly the 20s no not that art work more like 1800 see you have a beautiful piece of art , that some one turned into a pocket book , way before then
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly the frame u need to look at the frame see what year that is , but that frame positively does not go with the work , it's added later .
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
Def not 20s !! Think way before then
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly I'm so fascinated by this , in the mid 1700s under Marie Antoinettes reign men wore pink women blue , the clothing fits this time frame - now what has my attention is who did this ? In the middle of the French Revolution ? Only the very upper class women did this type of needle point back than , your pocket book is an amazing exact replica of the times in the French Revolution
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly to think you may have a tapestry that pretty much is hand done from that era and it all fits that time frame , This is the rococo time frame , wow can u tell me what the material of the tapestry feels like is it real Coarse ? Is it faded in spots like maybe it was hung and Sun faded parts ?
Jan 30Reply

duskybutterfly
@pamlaleyan the tapestry material is soft, & there's no fading that I can see, so maybe it was originally on a chair back, or some other furnishing? It's too small to be hung like a wall hanging tapestry I think. That's interesting what you say about the rococo period & clothing colors. I'm tempted to take this thing apart & look at the backing but I don't want to do any damage :o
Jan 30Reply

duskybutterfly
@pamlaleyan It seems evenly worn all over, except for the corners which show a white layer underneath. & it's funny bc all 4 corners are worn down exactly the same so I'm not even sure it's wear, but might be purposeful - part of the design. Hard to say... I'm out of my league for sure. I'll probably take it to my local antique shop & see what else I can find out. If you think of anything else let me know, you've got me so curious now!
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly honestly the antique shops they prob won't know u need to take that to a dry cleaner , some one that's been in the biz for awhile or a seem stress , they will know the material , than the thread ? U need to find out what the thread count is on that , think more towards some one that does needle point sewing dry cleaners , they will be able to identify the material
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly u said even wear on 4 corners ?
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly this was 8 x 10 if opened ?
Jan 30Reply

duskybutterfly
@pamlaleyan Aha.. I have a friend who knows a lot of sewers, maybe I'll start there. The wear on the corners is even there may be one corner that's a fraction longer than the others. I looked at them with a magnifier & it does look like wear but almost totally clean cut, no frays.
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly if this is an antique tapestry this is not is first look lol , meaning before it was this it was something else , but if you have a friend that knows people that sew or know material ? THATS GREAT !! that's how you will figure this out , what an amazing find !!!! Def without question its French the costumes on the men and women are of the French origin and the colors and scenes are of rococo time period , but what an amazing piece of history
Jan 30Reply

duskybutterfly
@pamlaleyan Laying flat it's approx 5&1/2 high x 6&3/4 wide, so it wouldn't be 8 x 10 opened. There's a panel on the bottom & sides about 1/2". Yeah I'm getting excited! To think it's that old! I don't for the life of me know where I got it lol! I'll keep you posted!
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly it could have been on the wall in a frame , or small furniture piece , but if that is from that time period , take it to the ROAD SHOW !!!
Jan 30Reply

pamlaleyan
@duskybutterfly please Lmk I'm very excited 💐💐
