izzypikachu THE SCAM: a seller is contacted by a person who offers to buy their item and pay through a cashiers check. The buyer then sends a much larger sum of money then originally intended, asking the seller to give the money to a third party, commonly movers of some sort, through western union or money gram.
Jul 25Reply
izzypikachu
izzypikachu The seller then sends the money, which turns out to not actually exist, as the check is fraudulent. So, the scammer will get large sums of real money, leaving the seller now out the amount that was wired to someone else.I had originally agreed upon a price for 110, but was sent a check for 1200. Being naive and trusting, I deposited this check.
Jul 25Reply
izzypikachu
izzypikachu The situation seemed suspicious however, as the buyer began hounding me about depositing RIGHT AWAY. I looked into it, and sure enough, I was being scammed. Thank god I did not spend any of that money or wire it to him. I could have been out thousands of dollars. I was already dinged 50 as a result of the check being bounced.

elenimus Oh wow ;( that's terrible! Thank you for posting. I read the whole thing and had something similar happen to me. Trying to do the same thing with a check and I suggested m e r c. or 🅿️p, but didn't get a response so I didn't insist on the conversation and ended it at that. Scary stuff though! Again, thank you for posting this.

shandell_marie
shandell_marie Hey guys, so this happened to me as well. I just got the check today and sent it to the fraud department of my bank. They got back to me and confirmed it fraudulent. I haven't sent my item. Any thoughts on what to do next?
Sep 24Reply
izzypikachu
izzypikachu @shandell_marie Don't continue responding to the guy, and if you can, block him. Save his emails, if he threatened you, you can report for harassment, if not, you can still report him to your local post office for mail fraud, which is a felony! Other than that you've done pretty much everything you could!
Sep 26Reply
shandell_marie
shandell_marie I actually called the FBI and reported it. I am saving everything. He is harassing me now. I'm not responding to him but he is calling and texting me constantly.

20mmcqua
20mmcqua Hey guys, so I see you all experienced what I think I am going through right now. I got the same type of email and I just received the check today. I unknowingly deposited the check before I read all this information. So now what do I do? Will the check just get bounced and I get charged a fee and that's all?
Jan 20Reply
truint1
truint1 @20mmcqua this same thing I think is currently happening to me. This girl had me email her regarding if my listing was still available, and then offered me the price plus an addition $40. She said it would be a bank certified check. I haven't received it yet but now I am very weary and scared. Will the bank know right away if it is fraudulent ?
Feb 14Reply
20mmcqua
20mmcqua @truint1 do not deposit the check!! Take the check to the bank and don't contact the person anymore. I deposited the check and the bank ended up having to close my account because it was at risk. I would just take the check to the bank and tell the the situation.
Feb 14Reply
truint1
truint1 @20mmcqua I guess the interesting this is what happens if you try to cash the check instead of depositing it? The person contacting me is Sandra.phillips@gmail.com, has anyone else been contacted by her??

kathymak
kathymak @annkreul I've gotten 2 comments from people asking me to e-mail them because they had a question about something I was selling. I e-mailed the guy and he responded with a sob story and wanted my contact info so he can mail me a check. Luckily my item was sold before he responded. I just responded that the item was no longer available. There are scammers out there. Watch out!!!!

sagius2017
sagius2017 @izzypikachu hi, thank you for the headsup. same thing is happening to me. The guy started by asking me if one item i listed was still available and asked me to contact him by email. I emailed him and he responded with a long email telling me that he had to take care of his sick son and would arrange someone to pickup my stuff.
Mar 31Reply
sagius2017
sagius2017 @izzypikachu He said he would mail me a certified check of $1050. The item he's buying from me is just less than $100. He told me to cash my portion and give the rest of the money to the guy who is coming for pickup. He asked me for my address and name, which I think he would use to mail the check.
Mar 31Reply
sagius2017
sagius2017 @izzypikachu Now I totally understand this must be another scam, but one thing I just don't get. How does the scam actually work? I mean, if I am going to deposit or cash the check, what will happen next? what are they going to steal from me?

I'm scared.
Apr 13Reply
shopchimie
shopchimie We are all dealing with the same person: 1. Always gmail account, 2. Same icu son in hospital story, 3. Additional $30 to keep for holding the item. Check to see if the package comes from Cranston RI, 02920. Scammer may be borrowing other business' address but must be in close proximity as the tracking number provides 02920 as the start scan point.
Apr 16Reply
shopchimie
shopchimie Turn the check over to fraud department at your bank as they should be able to confirm (once confirmed makes even more solid case), take a picture of the envelope w from address & the check to report to police office. Here is the contact info for the police office in RI: Cranston Police Department 5 Garfield Avenue Cranston, RI 02920 Phone: (401) 942-2211
Apr 16Reply
shopchimie
shopchimie I think it is best to report to the police officer near proximity of where the crime is first happening so they can check their local businesses. I plan to call and submit evidence myself today.
Apr 16Reply
shopchimie
shopchimie It is not OK to scam/threaten people. I thought I was the only person but apparently the same person is harassing others & breaking their inner peace. We can all take small measures to keep this a safe place.
Apr 16Reply
izzypikachu
izzypikachu @jasmine1218 hi! Report the check to your bank or post office, because it is mail fraud. Don't respond to anything the harasser says. Eventually he/she/they will stop.

rachelgriffiith
rachelgriffiith I just fell for this. Someone emailed me today and I sent them my address and phone # before really reading into it. I emailed them right away and said to disregard my agreement to sell, and do not send the check. But now I am scared because now they have my address. Am I in danger? What do I do now?
Apr 19Reply
sagius2017
sagius2017 @hjtrinkets I never responded to him anymore since I realized that it was a scam. He texted me a couple of times to arrange someone to pick up the remainder of the check. I just don't understand what and how he would benefit from this? If I did deposit the check, what else would happen besides my account being bounced? What are they going to get at all?
Apr 20Reply
sagius2017
sagius2017 @hjtrinkets Only knowing your email address won't allow them to do anything expect for sending you harassment messages. Even knowing your mailing address won't be a big problem I guess, unless their intent is to harm somebody. I think we'll just ignore them and see if they'll take further action. We can report it to the police if necessary.
Apr 20Reply
sagius2017
sagius2017 @hjtrinkets this can't only happen on postmark, even eBay has the same issue I guess. That's why they've made a very serious statement on the offline transaction. As long as we continue to shop or sell on trading website, we'll see thinks like to happen. We just need to pay extra attention.

Apr 26Reply
lovelaughshop22
lovelaughshop22 @bbylily722 don't touch the money or send anything the Check will bounce and unfortunately if you withdraw the funds you are liable to pay it back. This scam is over 10 years old and western union was sued at one point for turning a blind eye to fraudulent wires. Worst case scenario it bounces and you recover any, possible negatives
Apr 28Reply
bbylily722
bbylily722 @socky4thesole thank god i googled scammers on poshmark out of curiosity I went back an hour after I deposited and report it to the bank that it was a fraudulent check. They were nice enough to reverse the check. But what I'm curious about is what if I wait for the check to fully clear?
Apr 28Reply
lovelaughshop22
lovelaughshop22 @bbylily722 one of two things happens if your bank trust you they may release the full funds or $100 before the funds are actually verified. If they make you wait the full processing period it will just bounce and you'll see the hold amount that was deposited or full amount reversed in your account. If you spend it and had 1 dollar in your account then you'll get a whopping - $1000 negative. I worked in banking and unfortunately my mom was victim to this same scam and it was a 6,000 check.
Apr 28Reply
bbylily722
bbylily722 @socky4thesole people like that are such low lives....their mother should of swallowed them. God please forgive me, but people work hard for their money and these assholes just preys on people's hard earned money. I hope people would find this thread and not be the next victim.

He was begging me to send more money to another person in NIGERIA because his grandfather is DYING!? I didn't. It's now Memorial Day and can't get a hold of my bank until Tuesday. What will be my penalty because I deposited the fraudulent check?

mstoppelman
mstoppelman Hi all I just recently joined poshmark and got two scam emails. To the first, I was actually dumb enough to send out my address and phone number, but to the second, I simply replied that I would rather sell through Poshmark. I told the first scammer that I was no longer interested in selling my dress, and got an insulting reply, I have not responded since. If I end up getting a check I will take it to the bank for fraud right away, but I would just like some peace of mind from you all.
Jul 17Reply
mstoppelman
mstoppelman Is there something the scammer can do with the information I sent out? I know it's unlikely a scammer would show up at my house and harm me, considering he probably doesn't live in the US, but I would like some reassurance from those that have previously given out this info. I can't believe I was so dumb
Jul 17Reply

mcaridadp @izzypikachu they are telling me to go deposit the money. What do I do?
Jul 18Reply
mstoppelman
mstoppelman @mcaridadp hi I do believe the best course of action in this case is to take the check to the bank and tell your teller the check is a fraud. The bank will take the check most likely. Whatever you do, don't deposit the check. If these scammers continue to harass/threaten you, first of all don't respond but also take all the communication to the police and stay hyper vigilant.
Jul 18Reply
mstoppelman
mstoppelman @mcaridadp it's important to remember these people wont want to waste time targeting a single individual, but they also most likely don't live in the US. That being said, be sure to check your credit cards and bank accounts very carefully for a while to make sure there is no other kind of fraud

unicornbtq I had some free time today so when one of these comments popped I replied and when she wanted into told her to mail her check to the address of my nearest FBI field office with the name of the lead field agent on it. The "cell" number I gave was the main switchboard #. So I hope she has fun with that. Seriously though--don't take transactions off Posh and you will be fine.

I've told them multiple times the transaction is canceled and they don't listen.

amandadehay @jennahough I don't think someone would, but just in case I don't think it can hurt calling the police. Better safe than sorry especially since this is clearly a pattern! Also...maybe email the guy and said you've contacted the cops and that will be a deterrent to them

munkie671
munkie671 @izzypikachu hi this was the same scam going through many online selling sites. I had the same experience when I got sent a check larger than the amount by 4K with instructions to deposit and send through welsfargo. I did not cash the check or send money because the check upon further inspection was a company check. So what scammers do they use a company account and once you cash you can be the one to get in trouble for stealing and fraudulent check.

fdisbrow Thank you so much for posting this thread. I've had several of these people contact me on my listings and I didn't understand at first, but found this thread in time! So sad that people can't get their own jobs and instead spend all their time scamming people. Thanks so much for making others aware and so sorry they got you :(

fdisbrow
fdisbrow By the way, when you get scammers contacting you go to their page and report them. Click on the little "settings" icon in the top right hand corner on their page and click "report user" for conducting business outside PM. You can always tell its a scammer by going to their page and they won't have any "love notes" and won't have sent any "love notes". You can tell it's a BS account. Hope this doesn't happen to anyone else!

therewearaffair
therewearaffair If it's too good to be true it usually is. People try to scam us everyday here on Poshmark. This sort of thing doesn't happen on eBay. Poshmark really needs to crack down on this to make sure Poshmark is a safe selling environment for all sellers. The 20% fee is a lot to ask from us sellers and they should have plenty of resources to fix this problem.

fdisbrow @revabajjuri @rloyer520 Don't worry, they won't hurt you or kill you or your family, they will just move on to the next person & try to make easy scam money off of them. They just threaten people to scare them into going forward with the scam. They don't spend any extra time besides the time it takes to email/txt & then make $1000 scamming honest ppl. But don't be afraid, no one will be coming after you, I promise you this! My heart went out to you girls

bluenyc53 I got approached by 2 ppl for 2 separate items, I asked them why they are asking to do offline and one dropped right away disappeared, another sent me a long email asking all my info and promised to pay $50 more, which doesn't make any sense.
Sep 10Reply
bluenyc53
bluenyc53 If she was willing to pay extra $50 she doesn't need to do offline transaction. I stopped there and reported to poshmark, but poshmark ppl said they can't do anything about it.
Sep 10Reply
bluenyc53
bluenyc53 This was disappointing, as a company and who is providing the platform, they have to do something about it or have lawyer to find these ppl and block them or sue them, warn people like us etc. I was disappointed at poshmark regarding this matter.
Sep 10Reply
bluenyc53
bluenyc53 But for all new people here, especially someone like me just joined poshmark and experience this first time, just use your common sense. Nothing is free in general, and if someone offers money too good to be true, it won't be real just scam. Be smart and be safe!!

jungchick Yes, this happened to me before I sold on Poshmark. I was selling on Facebook and got the request for email. I received a check for 2,500. I knew immediately it was a scam and of course they wanted most of it back. I presented it to my back and they reported it to the Attorney general. Now, when I get these requests, I immediately take a screen shot. I block them and report them.

samedels
samedels @lauropageot don’t go to the bank. If you didn’t deposit the check you’re fine. The person who is doing it to you most likely does not live in Cali, but in another country

jschloem I think this is happening to me right now! Ruth Fred is their name, she said she will have a "shipping agent" come pick up my dress after I cash her check but she is located in a nonexistent shop located in Champlin MN. I looked her name up and she popped up as a scammer! STAY AWAY FROM RUTHFRED030 @ GMAIL.COM
