3. Measurements - My fake fits almost a size smaller and is very short. Get to know the real skirt's measurements and ask for measurements form the seller. EDIT: "Made in the USA" MAY be in all caps but fakes tend to say this too so be careful. cokeorpepsi @annamatt1 me too! I was surprised at all the realistic fake ones on the market.

cokeorpepsi @annamatt1 keep in mind that some of the real American Apparel tennis skirts vary in tags which make it harder to decipher which are real and which are fake by photo alone. I just posted a picture of three of the REAL AA skirts and the different tags.

cokeorpepsi @annamatt1 wow I'm so sorry! The wash tag is the best indicator of a fake skirt. I just posted a photo comparing them. That should confirm whether your skirts are authentic or not.

shopcrumb
shopcrumb You should make a more extensive post about the varying tags! The bottom one on the second pic looks very real but you're right - you shouldn't be able to put your finger under the tag.

cokeorpepsi @pink_tears I'm working on it! I only own one fake skirt and three real ones but there are so many different variations of real and fake AA tags that I don't know if I could cover them all. I thinking this post will need a Part 2😬

cokeorpepsi
cokeorpepsi @sandydo hi there! Hmm I can't really tell. Ask the seller for a pic of the wash tag. That's the best way to know.

celerystix13 aw bats i think someone sold me a fake. do i... do i do anything? i'm not sure if they even knew but ouch
Oct 24Reply
cokeorpepsi
cokeorpepsi @celerystix13 ugh I'm sorry to hear that😥 If you're 100% sure you got a fake, what I'd do is let the seller know. If you think they sold you one w/o knowing, I'd be nice but firm with them. Getting a fake skirt is so frustrating but if your seller really didn't know I'd be easy on them. I'd still vouch for a full refund though.

annbanane
annbanane i’d like to mention that i just order a black aa tennis skirt directly from the website and now that they are no longer made in the US, the quality isn’t as good and the label lifts up and is white. i purchased an authentic skirt from the website and now it’s completely different. i’m heartbroken by their new bad quality items

cokeorpepsi
cokeorpepsi @nikki7pink hi there! The skirt you tagged me in appears to have a real label. I would ask for a picture of the wash tag to make sure though 😊

annbanane
annbanane @cokeorpepsi yes i’ll upload it right now! when AA shut down and reopened they started manufacturing with the company GILDAN and now the sizing is messed up and it’s no longer made in the USA all skirt that say “jeans” are still of course fact but the stitching is very different now and the XS is way bigger than before. sadly i couldn’t fit the xs bc it is too big now. wasted my money :((.

lovelylady375
lovelylady375 Thank you so much for this! I feel like it’s tough to tell what’s real and what isn’t these days, especially on sites like these! There maybe sellers knowingly selling fake stuff or innocent sellers that don’t realize their stuff is fake. Best for buyers to know what to look for to protect themselves!

Dec 16Reply
cokeorpepsi
cokeorpepsi @allydoo hi there! Please see the last photo in the post. Also, I believe that AA only does their sales through Amazon now so your purchase is likely legit. Just make sure the seller is American Apparel's official storefront. 😊

zeldaa
zeldaa As an ex employee of AA I can tell you this information is totally false.
Feb 20Reply
zeldaa
zeldaa AA now does the white tags because it was purchased by Gilden and is no longer made in the USA.
Feb 20Reply
cokeorpepsi
cokeorpepsi @zeldaa Hi there. What exactly do you mean by "totally false"? This post is the result of several hours of research, correspondence with AA customers and employees, multiple trips to different AA stores and cross checking information with AA themselves. Furthermore, there are a multitude of posts talking about this exact issue and containing similar info throughout the internet.
Feb 20Reply
cokeorpepsi
cokeorpepsi @zeldaa Also, I already addressed the new tags in the last photo of this post (and in the comments) which I assume you didn't read? I was sold a fake skirt and I wish someone shared this kind of post before I was scammed. The purpose of this post is to share my knowledge and to help prevent anyone else from being scammed, which it has. And I am not going to let some comment try to undermine the value of this information.
Feb 20Reply
cokeorpepsi
cokeorpepsi @zeldaa And btw, since you say I am wrong, please feel free to make your own post. I can expect it to be totally different than mine because apparently mine is totally false. I would love to see it, especially since its from a former AA employee.

naomischeung
naomischeung Thank you for this! Eatdressblog mentioned Dec. 13, 2014 eyeslipshoes on Tumblr (https://eyeslipshoes.tumblr.com/post/105073950725/american-apparel-tennis-skirt-real-vs-dupe/amp) having serif typeface (like Times New Roman) on the AA tag+USA flag being real (JEANS text is fake), so it seems old 2013-2015 AA tags had that font before changing to sans serif Helvetica Black 2015-present. For real old skirts with serif tags, no lift+size on the wash tag helps authenticate like you mentioned.
Nov 17Reply
naomischeung
naomischeung The AA tags on skirts made in the USA (before 2017 GILDAN) don’t lift based on the photos of zeldaa’s 2013 skirts & eyeslipshoes’s 2014 skirt plus your post. The AA tag on a skirt made in China (after 2017 GILDAN) lift based on one I bought through AA on Amazon this Halloween 2022.
Nov 17Reply
naomischeung
naomischeung My rough understanding of the AA tag timeline: Made in the USA (before 2017): *2013-2015: serif+USA flag+no lift+side wash tag with size *2015-2017: Helvetica Black+USA flag+no lift+ side wash tag with size *2015-2017: Helvetica Black+made in the USA & size on wash tag (no flag)+no lift Made in China (after 2017) 2017-2022 (present): white Helvetica Black+made in China+ side wash tag with NO size The size on the China wash tag is the 3rd under 2 top wash layers.
