@parrishmf It can be tough.. "vintage" is easy, but most modern pieces are such a mix of styles it's hard to pin some down... but it can be fun trying.. Good luck!

@rangerric thanks for posting This! So many people try and pass items off as vintage!

@schoolofrock11 ... among other things... but that's another issue... (wink)

`i have a passion for vintage Dooneys and vintage Coach purses. Nothing annoys me more when a seller tries to pass off a 7 year old bag as vintage.... lol...well actually someone trying to pass off a counterfeit as real, annoys me more. Would you mind if I used this as a template for my own post like this? TYIA

a young Man I dated, said < He was in to Antiques, I corrected him and said No darling Sir, its Vintage. lol, I agree the number of ppl that mistake what these terms mean is annoying. but oh well,,,
Feb 22Reply

rangerric
@carolhazen I'm amused more often than annoyed... I seen several descriptions that said... "Vintage, Antique.. NWT's"... that's what I call covering all the bases... But as they say.. you can lead a horse to water.......

@rangerric you always know the jewelry name, manufacturer, era... you should be an appraiser! My uncle is, but the rule is that if you appraise something you can’t try to buy it or you lose your Appraiser’s license (in PA anyway)! A long time ago (2008?) I read that Vintage was 20 yrs old and then Etsy says 25+... if I think it’s vintage, it is! I see something I wore in the 90s and never get the vintage vibe!
Feb 23Reply

rangerric
@caityschmaity There has always been some confusion on that... mainly different kinds of items (cars & furniture was 25.. smaller items were 20.. but there is an attempt by the big auction houses & professionals to bring all the numbers in line.. I use to use 20, and it's still OK.. but 25 is now more accepted as the standard for all items..
Feb 23Reply

rangerric
@caityschmaity And for appraisers to buy what they were appraising would be a conflict of interest.. that's a common rule I think.. I just like to know and understand what I'm selling.. I'm old school that way.. Hopefully it lends some credibility to my descriptions..

@rangerric you are an amazing closet of info! I know I told you I have been collecting for eons, but only selling a couple years. There is so much to learn about jewelry, it can be daunting. I just learned that the lobster claw/clasp wasn't patented until 1996. So,... not vintage and certainly not an antique! I think I better revise some items! :-( Thank you for your help! Donna
Mar 13Reply

rangerric
@laboutiquegarag Don't go to crazy... the lobster comes in several flavors.. Monet's first patent was in 1959.. and there is a "76 version, and the latest "96 version.. Monet actually had an earlier version before the patent was granted...

rangerric
@laboutiquegarag Earlist use dates to "54-"55 for the "59 design.

@ppb1960 lots of confusion (or laziness) going around... as long as they get Vintage close, I'll be happy... then it's on to resolving the word "Boho".......

Could confusion be blamed on the area or venue? At our state fair, in the arts building, entries to the antique category must be 50 + years. 50 years is way different than 100.
Good to know what appraisers think! 💕

rangerric
@kristis123 These are guidelines used by most of the "associations" that relate to these topics... your state fair may do it that way simply to encourage participation... understandable for a state Fair...
Oct 11Reply

kristis123
@rangerric I wondered if that was the reason, to encourage participation of “regular” citizens, not just dealers. They usually have a terrific display of items, and it’s one of my favorite exhibits!
Oct 11Reply

rangerric
@kristis123 I'm sure... things like "Fairs" are for all the "towns" folk... the more the merrier... the dealers would know better...
Oct 11Reply

kristis123
@rangerric Yes, the state fair does use dealers and other specific item (cameras, for one) experts, for judges. I’ve a friend who’s qualified in photographic restoration who gets called in to judge “old” photographs.
Oct 11Reply

rangerric
@kristis123 I used to do that somewhere in the last century... (photo restoration)
Oct 11Reply

kristis123
@rangerric I’ve done some, because I used to work in a photo lab as transitioning to digital operations were taking place. I do know how to operate and work with an Adams Retouching Machine!!! Photoshop is more forgiving! 😂😂😂
Oct 11Reply

rangerric
@kristis123 I always did my retouching & spotting by hand... never used Adams...

@rangerric Thank you for posting this, it's a nice reminder. I think I need to redo a few things in my closet. I sometimes have the urge to list something as ‘old’ because I am not sure of the true age, and I suppose being a bit lazy too 😊 This and the other snippets are so informative.🌺💕

I'm sharing @vibes4vintage. I really try to learn about the goodies I find. people don't realize the times it takes at times to track things down. If you ever pass by one of my items and it needs a fix or deer don't hesitate I appreciate it. I love old photos too. I got an old stereoscope/graph to see it as they did. Found a bakelite viewmaster, imagine that's how ppl saw global images and people besides a paper and later films. Have a great Weekend!

@rangerric 🇵🇹🇵🇹 Hi! Thanks for posting this -- another post says vintage is 21 or older but I agree it needs to be at least a quarter of a century! What I find startling is the stuff I wore in the late 80's is VINTAGE! How did that happen?? 🤭 Question - if something is 25+ yrs old but never used and still has tags, can it be both vintage and NWT? I have some things in that category - or NWOT but over 25? 🇵🇹🇵🇹
Jan 21Reply

rangerric
@menageatrice The recommended reference is NOS (New old stock) "Vintage" was a mixed bag... larger items (cars, furniture, tapestries...) were always 25 .. smaller items like fashion was 20... there was a move in 2000 to bring the standards in sync... 25 for everything... still just a guideline...
Jan 21Reply

menageatrice
@rangerric 🇵🇹🇵🇹 Wow, thanks! First time I've seen NOS - good to know, as my mother-in-law was a real shopper and we got some of her estate. 🇵🇹🇵🇹
Jan 22Reply

rangerric
@menageatrice No one here on POSH uses NOS... but you will see it in other places... and most vintage groups and collectors prefer it... (galleries, dealers, museums, vintage guilds and organizations... etc) I usually just state in the description... "Vintage with tag still attached!"
