This beautiful black felt tilt hat consists of a high crown which is slanted forward and surrounded by an upturned short brim. The crown has a grosgrain band which holds a gold colored ostrich feather which is a bit faded, typical of hats of this age, and adds to the authenticity of this marvelous creation. The finishing touch is an intact long black spiderweb veil, which can cover the face as pictured, or it can be tucked on top of the brim, away from the face. There is also an elastic to keep the hat in a tilted position. This hat is a stunning example of the high fashion of the era.
Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these.
Labels: NEW YORK CREATION plus: MARTHA GENE - New York
The New York Dress Institute was formed in 1941 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a joint venture between the clothing manufacturers of New York City and the ILGWU. The label was created by a group of well-known designers who wanted to remain anonymous and wanted to support the New York Creation label and keep it competitive with French styles of the era. The label is small, white and blue and most of the time it states the hat size…22 or 23
This hat is in most wonderful vintage condition and has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Mannequin not for sale.
