Best childhood friends Bridget Vreeland, Lena Kaligaris, Tibby Rollins, and Carmen Lowell have just completed their first year of college and are planning to spend their summer apart. Bridget discovers her father had hidden letters from her grandmother Greta and rejects his explanation that he had the right to hide the letters as a way to protect her. She goes to Turkey, where she participates in an archaeological dig under Professor Nasrin Mehani. They find remains of a woman that died at the same age as Bridget's mother, which saddens Bridget. Later, she reads her grandmother's letters and decides to leave the dig to visit her in Alabama. There, Bridget learns that her mother, who committed suicide, had denied having depression or any mental issues at all. She would not allow anyone into her life who tried to challenge this or get her help. Bridget's father went along with this, but Greta could not, and moved away because she could not get her daughter to accept help. Greta tells Bridget her mother was sick and her suicide was not her father's fault. She also says that Bridget is 'stronger' than her mother so will not be sick like her. Bridget thinks her mother should have stayed alive for her sake and feels unloved/ abandoned. Greta says that her mother's love for Bridget is why she hung on as long as she did. The conversation allows Bridget to later reconcile with her father….. Case & Disc show minimal wear.
