Franciscan was started in California because of the unique clay found in the area and was produced at the Glendale (later Los Angeles) plant. Gladding-McBean chose the name "Franciscan," feeling it was symbolic of California's early history. The Desert Rose pattern was first manufactured in late 1941. It is the best-selling American dinnerware pattern in history. Franciscan Desert Rose was discontinued in 2013.
The pattern was modeled after Rosa Rugosa. The simplicity of the look was easily adaptable to hand-painting.
These dishes were made in California until 1984 when the Franciscan brand was sold to Wedgewood in England, and the production was moved to Staffordshire, England. In this case, the “Made in USA” is preferred to the “Made in England”
Fun fact: In Golden Girls, Season 1 Episode 3, Sofia, Dorothy, and Blanche have tea out of a Desert Rose Teapot.
