This collection of evil eyes (nazar) includes mostly glass pieces and one hand-stitched felt evil eye. All items are from Turkey. Most of these have holes for attachment (see photos), one does not, and has a flat back. These can be used to decorate home and outdoor spaces, and are thought to provide protection. Some of these evil eyes could also be worn as jewelry. The largest piece is about 3" across. What does it symbolize? The Nazar Boncuk symbolizes the jealous and envious look of others; according to the popular belief, the evil eye has the power to cause various misfortunes to a person or his property. Turkish people believe that this amulet protects its holder from the bad energies by absorbing them. The nazar boncugu originated in Turkey. Derived from Arabic terms, nazar means sight and boncuk, or boncuğu, means beads. Thus, it’s a bead of the eye.
