He is known as "the cowboy artist" and was also a storyteller and author. He became an advocate for Native Americans in the west. Russell produced a number of paintings in the late 1800's early 1900's capturing the west, cowboys, Indians, horses, stagecoaches, prospectors, miners, and some of the everyday and rougher aspects of daily life (heists, fights, etc.).
