The Age of McCarthyism, Schrecker

This listing is for "The Age of McCarthyism" by Ellen Schrecker. It is in guc due to highlighting in the first few chapters & handwritten notes at the top on a few pages. Quality of book is unaffected. Era named after the Senator from Wisconsin who conducted hearings and investigations regarding espionage government from supposed communist spies. McCarthy's accusations were so wild its like reading about someone afflicted with paranoid schizophrenia. I say this with absolute stoicism. This Second Red Scare was based on the fear of what we didn't understand: communism. We fear what we don't know & instead of looking inward to question "why" we scapegoat others. We prefer to "channel" the fear into something more tangible. Someone or something to bear the weight of our discomfort. The ridiculously named HUAC committee did these so-called investigations. The first part of the book speaks a bit about the attitudes toward communism from WW2 to the Cold War. The historical documents make up about 2/3 of the book. It makes it easy to skip around. Incredibly dense book. Showed a few pages of the contents so you get an idea. I'lll put it for sale but may edit because I'm still thinking about it.
