This fur coat was designed by Bonnie Cashin, most likely in the 70’s and was sold at a department store called The Union in Columbus, Ohio. The fur department was run by a man named Peter Monett. Apparently back in the day, it was seen as a status symbol to buy your furs from this shop, so fur makers put the shop label on, rather than the designer label. Hence, the odd location of the Bonnie Cashin label.
This is where it gets kind of cool. I found Peter Monett! He is still alive, and still lives in Columbus. I reached out to him to gather information on this special coat and to get advice on repairing it. The fur seams are falling apart in the back and around the arm holes. He has informed me that fur coats of this age can’t fully be repaired. I took the coat to a fur repair shop here and spoke with a woman who confirmed that, even if the fur seams were stitched back together, they will just fall apart in other areas eventually.
That being said, this coat is for sale as a collectors item for display only, or an ambitious project. Fortunately, the collar, lining, and front of the coat are in great condition. The coat has 2 hook and eye closures, and one of the pieces needs to be sewn back on. It is currently held on with a safety pin. I have safety pinned the back together to avoid further tears due to the weight of the coat. Please review all photos and ask questions!
Bonus gloves included.
