You can own a special, unique piece of history in this wooden-backed, 24-piece signed tile tray depicting an encounter between a matador and a bull.
The Fábrica de Loiça ceramics works in Sacavem, Portugal was in operation from the 1850s to the 1980s.
World-known for their designs and artistry, they created household objects, sculptures and murals for train stations and even the Queen Mary. A museum in Sacavem operates today and celebrates their creations and history.
The scene, figures, and general aesthetic impact aligns with sculptural work by one of its artists working there in the same era, Clariano Casquinha da Costa (in photo). Tiles are signed "DC" or maybe a stylized "JDC."
The brushwork, figuring, depth of color all point to the work of an artist dedicated to breathing life into this composition, classic in its subject, but bespoke in its artistry. You are bringing home a work of art that is not reproduced for tourism purposes when you purchase this collectible artifact.
Some minor chips in corners (see photos), but no tiles are cracked or crazed, so you absorb the scene in the way it is intended. Wooden tray looks like oak around the edges and elegantly art deco handles; natural finish. Suitable for display or for use.
17" X 13" X 1" with 1" handle extension
