This lacquered Russian box was on display at The Dragon Dreams Museum in Chattanooga, TN, which closed permanently in 2016. It is hinged and has a red lacquer interior. The hand-painted top depicts St. George about to spear a two-headed dragon. The box and painting are in excellent condition. Russian lacquer art developed from the art of icon painting which came to an end with the collapse of Imperial Russia. The icon painters, needing a way to make a living, developed the craft of papier-mache decorative boxes. The artists lacquered and hand painted them, often with scenes from tales such as St. George and the Dragon.
