Early Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transferware Plate Staffordshire “The Reaper” Bathwell and Goodfellow Circa 1820 9 3/4 inches
Excellent condition except for utensil marks. No chips, cracks, rough edges, discoloration or crazing. Blues and whites are clear and bright with no discolorations.
An early 19th Century antique English Georgian blue and white transfer indented pottery plate printed in “The Reaper” pattern from the Rural Scenery series produced by Bathwell & Goodfellow of Upper House Works, Burslem, Staffordshire 1818 – 1823 and at Tunstall from 1820 – 1822. The bucolic scene depicts a Reaper with his sickle, conversing with a woman and child beneath a tree with cottages in the background. Backstamp with series title RURAL SCENERY within a pastoral cartouche printed in underglaze blue above an impressed mark.
Diameter - about 9.75 inches
Year - Circa 1820
Rural Scenery - A series that commenced being trademarked in the five-year partnership of Goodfellow & Bathwell. Likely originating from the first partnership of Rhead & Goodfellow. The pattern has a border of roses and other small flowers with prominent acanthus type scrolls.
