The faces on these foo dogs are serious, not goofy, like many carved items out there. Foo dogs are known as “guardian lions” who guard against negativity and promote good Feng Shui. The intricately carved, reticulated urn/burner is in the center of this carved soapstone figure, flanked by two serious Foo dogs, & the top-most Foo dog is the incense burner cover. This piece is, at least, vintage, likely dating to early-mid-20th century. It appears the top Foo dog may be missing a small piece of stone on the back of his right ear (see photo) but otherwise, this piece is in excellent vintage condition. It was never used as an incense burner; it has been solely a decorative object. The base, which is a darker, marbled type of soapstone, is attached to the burner and does not appear to be removable. Smoke-free and pet-free home. Marked 4-11 on bottom.
