This is a 14K WG very fine hand filagreed ring Circa 1910-1925. It features a banded Agate that has been hand carved from the black, preserving the white of the stone to depict a Roman Centurion. The entire ring from the bands up to the prongs is hand pierced with as many openings as constructively possible to not compromise its ability to hold the stone and not collapse. Additionally, hand milgraining in tiny dots is engraved around every opening. The stone is held in by four 3 clawed prongs on each side. This ring may appear simple, but I assure you as a jeweler, this hand made ring was a feat to make. Just to clean it when I found it took me weeks to literally floss out every piercing with a fine needle and a silk thread since the gallery was filled with sand. At the timeframe this ring was made by Ostby Barton of Providence, R.I. Ostby and his daughter Helena went on a jewelry buying trip to Europe...on The Titanic. Although Mr. Ostby perished, Helena survived and continued to run Ostby Barton Jewelers which at the time was the most profitable wedding ring company in the world. It is more than interesting to me that this ring dates from nearly the exact time of the sinking of The Titanic in 1912. Although a long shot, it is a very good possibility this was hand made by Englehart Cornelius Ostby since he was an actual fine jeweler trained at the Royal School of Art in Norway prior to emigrating to the US to specialize in ring making and engraving.
