Gene Shelly was a California designer with stores all over. Very well known for beaded wool knits. Most bead work was done in British colonial Hong Kong, China which was known for the finest bead work in the world. So this fabulous dress is an historical artifact as well as a fashion statement. Most people are unaware of the British rule in China and the fact that China has been the world’s manufacturer for decades. It is interesting how most associate China with cheap goods when China had been known for their fine handmade goods. Wealthy business men had suits made in Hong Kong.
