These are a vintage set of salt & pepper shakers from the 1950's. They are marked "Japan," indicating made in Japan. The Ubangi look was quite a common depiction for Africans with whimsical everyday notions and this couple are a good historical example of this. They are made of a bisque hand- painted porcelain and stand about 5 1/2" high (the seated figure is a little shorter ).Their tongues are out to add more whimsy (add salt & pepper to make more tasty). Their condition is excellent with no one one chip in the paint (on an earring - a small hole in the paint on the seated figure). There is no loss of color on either figure. This is a piece of history from once upon a time when even salt and pepper shakers would become politically incorrect.
These are vintage, used and as is.
