STEINLEN CATS TEA TOWEL
ew artists have been more passionately fond of cats than Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (French, 1859-1923), a wiss-born graphic artist who lived in Paris. He drew cats throughout his long career with unvarying grace and skill, articularly those from his Montmartre neighborhood. Steinlen's models were habitués of rooftops, gutters, cemeteries, nd garbage bins, the pets of local artists, seamstresses, and concierges. Their antics are illustrated in the artist's most mous book, Des chats: images sans paroles (Cats: Pictures without Words), ca. 1898, a copy of which is in the useum's collection. The charming images on our tea towel are adapted from Steinlen's drawings inDes chats.
