Showcasing exquisite craftsmanship, this vintage Zuni Knifewing brooch is a striking example of Native American inlay artistry. Featuring hand-cut turquoise, coral, jet, shell, and mother of pearl stones, this symbolic piece is set in unmarked but tested sterling silver. The geometric inlay work represents the powerful Knifewing, a spiritual figure in Zuni tradition that has a combined human-bird form. The Knifewing is believed to represent protection, strength wisdom, courage and honor.
This piece is very unusual and I have never seen another like it. Most Knifewing pieces have legs but this pin has tail feathers like a thunderbird.
• Measurements: 1 7/8” tall x 1 3/4” wide
• Weight: 10.3 grams
• Material: Unmarked but tested sterling silver
• Condition: Excellent vintage condition
The silverwork and symbolism are consistent with traditional Native American Zuni craftsmanship. While the piece is unsigned, the quality and design suggest it may be Native American-made, though this cannot be confirmed.
