Siam (Thailand) Sterling Silver Ring Goddess Mekhala - Size 6.5

Siam (Thailand) sterling silver niello ring with the Goddess Mekhala. This is a sterling silver ring from Thailand (formerly known as Siam). This Niello ring features the goddess Mekhala. The ring is stamped sterling, which can be partially seen with a loupe near one side of the band. When soldering the band to the top of the ring they obscured some of the sterling stamping with solder. The ring is size 6.5 and is in very good overall condition. If you look at the Mekhala goddess with a loupe, you can see the great detail in her outfit and face. The top of the ring measures approx. 3/4" in diameter. "Niello" is a Latin word meaning "black," and it is a decorative technique that creates a beautiful contrast between silver and black, as seen with the goddess image surrounded by a black background. Mekhala is a significant goddess in Hindu-Buddhist mythology. She is recognized as the goddess or spirit of lightning, often depicted with a crystal ball that she uses to create flashes of light for protection (as you can see in the ring). In Khmer mythology, she also holds dominion over the waters and the sea.
