Army Veteran Yazzie Johnson (Navajo Winslow, AZ) and Gail Bird (Santo Domingo and Laguna Pueblo Oakland, CA) met as children, both having parents who worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Utah. They both attended UC Berkeley, as well University of Colorado Boulder together in early adulthood. In 1972 The couple began crafting jewelry together. Known for their innovative jewelry, which often blends contemporary, and prehistoric design motifs. Their jewelry frequently pushes the boundaries of American Indian jewelry, but it is not without an appreciation for the historic past with designs often influenced by petroglyphs.
