This is a vintage American Cut covered candy dish pattern, named Eleanor, which was discontinued in 1955. This beautiful piece features a deep-cut pinwheel design. The American Cut Glass Company was a contemporary of larger and more famous glass-cutting houses during the Brilliant Period (approximately 1876–1917). High-lead-content crystal glass was hand-cut into elaborate and intricate patterns during this time. Some characteristics of this period included Brilliance: The use of lead in the crystal produced exceptional clarity and light refraction.
Intricate cutting: Patterns included hobstars, fans, and diamond motifs, among others.
Hand finishing: While methods like acid polishing became common toward the end of the era, the best pieces were hand-polished.
