It embodied the sort of women in mens’ clothing aesthetic where we have been lucky to play in AND yet remain committed to the feminine aesthetic, a leather & lace pairing firmly footed in fashion. I bought my first leather double-breasted black jacket, sewed an enormously heavy black maxi-skirt & bought my first pair of seriously beautiful Joan & David leather combat boots (hard to find back then, when the internet was just getting traction & websites on the WWW were for corporations or small businesses who smartly followed the DIGITAL light. It wasn’t a bonus caveat in doing any business; it WAS the ANCHOR required of almost any business ushered in to a new age. Back then it was a private eye effort to locate a leather jacket from a VOGUE COVER SHOT, finding brand reps or little shops from LA to NYC, which also meant incurring EXORBITANT LONG-DISTANCE PHONE BILLS to seek & find something not sold in a local chain or mall dept. store.
