Classic IBM THINK sign with bold black lettering on a cream background. Perfect for collectors of office decor. These signs were widely distributed as a complimentary gift or salesman sample by the International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation, and were a ubiquitous part of the company's culture for decades.
The one-word slogan "THINK" was introduced by Thomas J. Watson Sr. in 1911 when he was a sales manager at the National Cash Register (NCR) Company. He felt his sales team wasn't using their heads enough, and wrote the word on an easel during a meeting to emphasize the importance of thought and knowledge. When Watson moved to the company that would become IBM in 1914, he brought the motto with him. It became the core philosophy and an internal rallying cry, appearing on everything from notepads and advertising to products and the company magazine. By the 1950s, IBM had offices worldwide and produced the "THINK" signs in many different languages. The signs were a common feature in IBM offices from the 1920s to the 1970s and became an enduring symbol of American business culture.
