Charming vintage “Weather Maid” postcard from Atlantic City, N.J., made by Shore Studios (Brigantine, NJ). This novelty postcard features a fuzzy flocked skirt that was originally designed to change color with the humidity—blue for fair, pink for rain, and orchid for high humidity. Today, the skirt remains soft to the touch, but color change function is untested and likely inactive after all these decades.
Dating Opinion
Based on style, printing, and Shore Studios branding, this is almost certainly from the late 1950s to early 1960s. The use of the "N.J." abbreviation with periods, the art style, and the novelty fuzzy skirt feature were most popular in this era.
Displays rough edges, a top crease, minor soiling/discoloration, and typical handling wear, but retains great nostalgic appeal. Atlantic City, N.J. printed along the side in the classic old-style abbreviation with periods.
This is a quirky piece of midcentury Americana, perfect for postcard collectors, New Jersey history fans, or lovers of oddball paper ephemera. Harder to find with the flocked skirt intact.
Professional packaging always, since 2003.
