A highly collectible piece of Mid-Century American studio pottery. This iconic "Satyr Vase" was a rare collaboration between master potter David Gill and famed sculptor Leonard Baskin for Bennington Potters.
This is a beautiful example of Vermont stoneware, featuring a striking, hand-pressed relief of a Satyr (or Faun) face. The vessel has a robust, ribbed exterior characteristic of Gill's wheel-thrown work, with a light-colored glazed interior.
Artists: David Gill (Potter) & Leonard Baskin (Sculptor/Design)
Studio: Bennington Potters, Bennington, Vermont
Year: 1964
Medium: Stoneware with glazed interior
Markings: Hand-signed on the bottom "Bennington Potters" and numbered "6/50" (No. 6 of a very limited edition of 50 pieces).
Dimensions: 8.25" tall, 5-7/8" at opening, 5-3/4" at base, approx. 7" at widest point
Condition: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Hairline Crack: There is a faint hairline crack visible on the exterior and interior, starting at the rim and going about 75% of the way down. It does not appear to compromise the structural integrity for display use. The piece still displays beautifully. The hairline crack is on the side but toward the back and is very faint. The rarity and provenance of this vase still make it a significant find for collectors. The item is priced to reflect the condition issue.
