This beautiful Turkish manuscript is a hand made print of the famous al-Idrisi world map, also known as the Tabula Rogeriana or a section from the Kitab nuzhat al-mushtaq (The Excursion of One Who Longs to Traverse the Horizons). The map was originally created in 1154 by the Arab geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi for King Roger II of Sicily. The illustration depicts the known world, with a focus on the Mediterranean Sea, northern Africa, Europe, and parts of Asia. It was based on information gathered from earlier Greek and Arabic sources, as well as first-hand accounts from travelers.
Hand painted and showcasing the intricate details, vibrant colors and ornate design characteristic of the era's artistic skill.
