This is a rare Chinese woven kesi evening bag.
Kesi or Kossu is not embroidered but woven.
Kesi is said to be more valuable than gold.
Please look at the weave and the fabulous colors that have still retained their vibrancy.
I have never seen a hand bag made of this precious woven cloth.
It was an antique when bought by the original owner.
There is a little mirror and her note inside.
Please see photos as they are part of the description.
Woven Kesi (缂丝) from China is an exquisite, ancient silk tapestry art known as "cut silk" for its sharp color lines, created by weaving discontinuous colored wefts into continuous silk warps on a vertical loom, resulting in reversible, detailed images used for scrolls, clothing, and wall hangings, flourishing from the Tang dynasty and now a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Antique Chinese Kesi clothing, also called Kossu, is exquisite, hand-woven silk tapestry fabric known for its painted-like detail, used for imperial robes and luxury items, particularly during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, featuring intricate designs like dragons, phoenixes, and auspicious symbols, with each color area woven separately, making it incredibly time-consuming and valuable, earning it the nickname "cut silk" for its precise technique.
