Black Forest carving is a tradition that originated in the Black Forest region of southwestern Germany, known for its dense forests and skilled woodworkers.
The craft gained popularity in the 19th century as woodcarvers began creating intricate decorative items, furniture, and cuckoo clocks for the tourist trade. These carvings often feature motifs inspired by nature, such as animals, foliage, and scenes from rural life.
The Black Forest region's abundance of wood and the availability of skilled artisans contributed to the development of this unique art form. The tradition continues to this day, with contemporary carvers producing both traditional and modern designs.
Black Forest carvings are highly valued for their craftsmanship and attention to detail.
This particular piece showcases the characteristic deep relief carving and dark finish typical of Black Forest items from the late 19th or early 20th century.
In excellent antique condition. A stunning piece of architectural salvage. I can see styling this with a hanging pocket watch, as a small book shelf or a trinket shelf to display antique bottles or minis.

@moonbeam1 It’s 7 inches inside but if you’re placing something inside, I’d say 6 or 6.5” to be safe. I added a photo so you can see. I hope this helps.

@moonbeam1 Hi! It’s 7 inches high, but if you’re placing something inside, I’d say 6 to 6.5 max of object. It’s 5 inches wide in the circle.
