Location: The unique crystalline petrified wood is predominantly found in Alabama, particularly around the town of Brilliant, and in other counties like Marion and Elmore.
Formation: The wood is the result of a long petrification process where tree cellulose was replaced by silica, creating cavities filled with quartz crystals.
Appearance: It is famous for its high-quality quartz crystals, including smoky quartz, which give it a "blingy" or brilliant appearance. It can also have a variety of colors, such as browns, whites, and yellows.
Age: The wood is from the Cretaceous period and is associated with the Coker formation.
Unique nickname: Besides "brilliant wood," it is also known locally by nicknames such as "diamond wood".
