Offered here is a vintage 1933 hardcover copy of Silver Chief: Dog of the North by Jack O’Brien, illustrated by Kurt Wiese and published by The John C. Winston Company (Chicago/Philadelphia/Toronto/Atlanta/San Francisco/Dallas). This adventurous juvenile novel follows a Canadian Mountie and his powerful husky–wolf hybrid dog Silver Chief through the Canadian wilderness, in the tradition of Jack London’s dog stories. The book includes a full-color frontispiece of Silver Chief and multiple black-and-white illustrations throughout the text by noted children’s book illustrator Kurt Wiese.
This copy is a school edition with “This book is the property of the State of Texas” and a 1930s issue/return chart printed on the front and rear pastedowns, as well as BHS/LHS school stamps and student doodles on the endpapers. The publisher’s “Hercules Binding” notice is present, and the copyright page confirms 1933 as the original publication date. The blue cloth boards feature a black silhouette of Silver Chief with pawprints on the front and spine titling; the cloth is heavily worn at the spine, edges, and corners, with fraying and partial spine cloth separation, giving the book a well-loved, rustic look.
