Originally created as toys for children and souvenirs for tourists, they have evolved into collectible art pieces. Traditional Kokeshi dolls are made entirely of dogwood. The art style and decorations are unique to each maker. Since the 1950s, makers sign their work, usually on the bottom or back. There are 12 styles of Kokeshi dolls, each from a different hot spring town or area. They are known as guardians of the home.
