John Carroll Doyle (1942–2014) was a self-taught artist whose diverse subject matter included vibrant cultural scenes such as “Fat Cats” and “Maxwell Street Market”. Doyle was renowned for his vibrant and expressive depictions of Southern culture, jazz, and blues musicians. His work often features bold brushwork and a mastery of light and shadow, as seen in this piece which captures a soulful pianist in mid-performance. Doyle's style straddles the line between representation and abstraction, frequently evoking the rhythm and energy of his subjects through gestural techniques.
