Offered is a stunning, authentic 19th-century Chinese Rose Medallion export porcelain basin/shallow bowl. This piece dates to approximately 1850–1880 and showcases the superior craftsmanship of the late Qing Dynasty.
Unlike modern reproductions, this basin features exceptionally thick, "raised" enamels (fencai) that provide a tactile, jewel-like texture. The hand-painted decoration is divided into traditional alternating panels: vivid "Mandarin" court scenes and lush "Birds and Flowers" motifs, all set against a gold-wash ground populated with butterflies and floral scrolls.
Condition & Details:
• Dimensions: Approximately 10 inches (Large Basin form).
• Markings: Traditionally unmarked with a characteristic gritty, unglazed foot rim.
• Quality: Fine brushwork is evident in the facial features and hair of the figures.
Condition: This basin is in remarkable antique condition. It retains its vibrant palette and original gilding with only light, age-appropriate wear. Notably, there is a small area of rim fritting with localized oxidation. This is a natural characteristic of mid-19th-century export porcelain where the raw clay body has darkened slightly over time upon exposure. To the serious collector, this serves as an honest hallmark of age and distinguishes it from later, mass-produced reproductions. (See last photo)
