Balkan Antique Folk Crochet Cotton Dress

I went down an Internet rabbit hole with this piece! This dress is a vintage cotton gauze dress typically attributed to the brand Balkan by George Georgiou, dating back to the 1960s or 1970s. Product Details • Material: Made from 100% natural cotton gauze, known for its lightweight and “gauzy" texture. • Design Features: The dress is characterized by a prominent hand-crocheted floral lace yoke (neckline) and features similar crochet detailing on the cuffs. • Style: It is widely described as a boho, hippie-chic, or peasant-style dress, often used for casual wear or even as a rustic “boho" wedding dress. Style it however you want. • Origin: Made in Cyprus!! Traditional Balkan dress consists of intricately embroidered, locally sourced garments- predominantly linen, wool, and sheepskin —that vary significantly by region, village, and occasion. Iconic elements include the fustanella (pleated skirt)jelek (vest), and opanci (leather shoes), with heavily decorated attire serving as a marker of cultural identity. This is a rare vintage piece and idk how it ended up in Austin, TX! I’ve found the exact version on Depop priced at $110 and on Etsy for $350! I also initially photographed it on the model backwards but it looks beautiful so I added the pictures anyway. This would have been a base layer for traditional Balkan folk dress.
