Vintage Peruvian Alter by Peruvian Artist Florentino Jimenez RARE Diorama
Good/fair pre owned condition, one figure missing his hand, some light chips around edges-see close ups
Depicting a mask maker shop by Florentino Jimenez T of
Cahuide Puca Cruz, Ayacucho
Retablos are a popular Peruvian artform. Brightly painted boxes with
hinged doors that open to reveal festive scenes of life in the Andean
highlands.
Most likely produced in the 1950s. Handcrafted and signed by the
artist, Florentino Jimenez. I believe he is part of the talented
Jimenez family. The scene depicts men, women, and children at a mask
maker's shop in animated discussion. I band of musicians, and a group
of dogs under the merchant's table
The box measures 7.5 inches tall-10.5 including the point of the roof.
12.25 inches wide, 3.25 inches deep. Signature on the back is clear
and crisp. There are signs of damage. One figure is missing a hand.
And there are some chips here and there, as well as some overall sun
fading. The scene has a natural rustic look.
Florentino Jimenez Toma, of Ayachuco, died in 2005 and was considered the finest Maestro of Peruvian folk art. A collection of his work is part of the Instituto Riva Aguero, the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions
pre-packed SUPER carefully with tissue weaving in between figures, and the piece is packed in a box-inside-a-box :)
