Pair of hand painted Russian Orthodox wooden icon eggs signed and dated 1991.
These decorative wooden eggs feature traditional Orthodox Christian iconography. One egg depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, representing the Iveron Mother of God icon. The second egg depicts Saint George slaying the dragon, a classic subject in Orthodox religious art.
The reverse side of each egg includes a Cyrillic inscription reading:
"Русъ святая храни веру свою"
Translation:
"Holy Rus, preserve your faith."
One egg is signed and dated on the base:
Лк. Лосов
1991 г
Likely the artist's signature and year of creation.
Details
Hand painted wood
Russian Orthodox icon style
Signed and dated 1991
Approximately 3.5 inches tall
Approximately 2.5 inches wide
Because these are handmade, the eggs are slightly different shapes and not perfectly symmetrical.
The bases are not completely flat, so they do not stand securely on their own without support.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with light surface wear consistent with age. Minor scuffs and paint wear may be present. Please review all photos carefully for details.
These are beautiful pieces of Russian religious folk art and would make a wonderful addition to a collection of Orthodox icons, devotional art, or Easter decor.
