The Championships series was created in the late 20th century to celebrate British sporting traditions, with this particular design depicting a Victorian-era tennis match scene complete with players in period costume and a clock tower finial. The teapot reflects Sadler's long tradition of producing decorative and collectible teaware, particularly their famous novelty teapots that became highly popular from the 1930s onward.
