This is a Chinese puzzle ball, also known as a "generation ball" or "happiness sphere". It is a type of intricate collectible carved from a single piece of stone. This puzzle is made from Serpentine which has been used since ancient Rome for carving large, detailed pieces. Serpentine is a common "jade simulant" frequently marketed as "New Jade" or "Olive Jade." ~ Ball is 4" diameter, box is 5" square and it weighs approx 4 lbs. ~ The ball features multiple concentric spheres carved freely inside one another, representing generations of a family (every movement of the spheres seems to create a different face) ~ The outermost sphere has detailed, hand-carved floral and leaves motif. ~ It is symbolic of family unity and love, with the inability to separate the spheres symbolizing unbreakable family bonds. ~ These intricate carvings require great skill and are typically created using traditional Chinese techniques.
