Description:
Handmade vintage Chinese child’s hat crafted to resemble a stylized tiger face with protruding ears, appliqued eyes and nose, and embroidered whiskers, in multicolored silk and velvet fabrics.
Measures approximately 8 inches in diameter (inner opening) and features a purple silk back flap and long red tassel for added protection and decoration.
Intricately embroidered floral and animal motifs on the sides and back, consistent with traditional “tiger head” protective hats made for children to ward off evil spirits and to grant courage and good fortune.
Likely dates from the early 20th century, around the late Qing to Republic era (circa 1900–1940), similar to other silk and cotton protective tiger hats from northern China and minority areas.
This type of hat is commonly referred to as a Chinese child’s tiger hat or tiger head hat (hǔtóumào), traditionally worn for festivals and birthdays as a symbolic charm against illness and harmful spirits.
