Entitled "Madonna and Child with Saints," the work was painted in oils on wood about 1490. Bellini, the most famous among a family of painters, was a pioneer in using oil paints (then a new technique) to achieve the vibrant colors that characterize Venetian Renaissance painting. In his long life he created numerous portraits, allegories, altarpieces, and landscapes. His later years were marked by the production of a long succession of Madonnas-tender, serene, and inward-looking, painted in colors that were rich yet not flamboyant. Bellinis students Giorgione and Titian became masters in their own right.
