Vintage Hawaiian 1940s Handmade White Palaka Holoku Wedding Dress W/Train Loop Found in the small 1-room building that is the thrift store of my church- a tiny historical Catholic Church that served mainly the Portuguese immigrants who lived here during the glory days of Hawaii’s sugar industry, in my little rural home town of Pahala- nestled at a plateau along the back slopes of active volcano Mauna Loa. Beautifully preserved in an old dry cleaning bag, I knew immediately I found something special. The stitching and ultimately the Talon brand zipper, manufactured between the early 1930s to mid 1940s confirmed the age of the item. Most impressive is the clean white color, a rare find without any significant yellowing. Someone took really good care of this. No tags as it’s a handmade item. Should fit a modern large. A full length dress with train (this traditional plantation era Hawaiian dress style is called a Holoku gown) Features 1/2 length sleeves. Made from palaka checked square fabric, white on white. Palaka fabric was used historically by plantation workers and Hawaiian Paniolo, or cowboys, due to its durable construction. It is overall in beautiful condition, with a few inconspicuous spots from age, please see photos.
